What Is an Ergonomic Risk Assessment?

An ergonomic risk assessment is an evaluation of workplace tasks, workstations, tools, and work processes to identify physical risk factors that could lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) — injuries affecting muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and joints. Common MSDs include back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, and neck and shoulder disorders.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, employers have a general duty to ensure the safety, health, and welfare of their workers, which includes identifying and managing ergonomic hazards. DOSH has also issued specific Guidelines on Occupational Safety and Health for Ergonomics to assist employers in managing ergonomic risks systematically.

Ergonomic risk factors commonly assessed include:

  1. Awkward or static postures
  2. Repetitive movements and high task frequency
  3. Forceful exertions and manual handling loads
  4. Contact stress and pressure points
  5. Vibration — hand-arm and whole-body
  6. Workstation layout, equipment design, and work environment factors
