What Is Chemical Exposure Monitoring?

Chemical exposure monitoring is the systematic measurement of airborne contaminants or biological indicators in the workplace to determine whether workers are being exposed to hazardous chemicals at levels that could harm their health. It is a key component of any effective chemical health risk management programme.

Under the USECHH Regulations 2000, employers are required to conduct exposure monitoring where a CHRA has identified a need, or where there is reason to believe that exposure to chemicals hazardous to health may exceed or approach occupational exposure limits (OELs).

Chemical exposure monitoring generally falls into two categories:

Air Monitoring (Occupational Hygiene Monitoring)

Measurement of airborne chemical concentrations in the worker's breathing zone or general work area, including:

  • Personal air sampling for inhalation exposure
  • Area or static sampling for workplace contamination mapping
  • Real-time direct reading measurements for immediate hazard identification

Biological Monitoring

Measurement of chemicals or their metabolites in biological samples such as blood or urine, providing a direct indicator of total body absorption regardless of exposure route. Common examples include:

  • Blood lead levels for lead-exposed workers
  • Urinary mercury for mercury-exposed workers
  • Urinary mandelic acid for styrene-exposed workers

Our Chemical Exposure Monitoring Process

1

Pre-Assessment Review

We review your CHRA findings, chemical inventory, work processes, and shift patterns to design a monitoring strategy that accurately represents actual worker exposure conditions.

2

On-Site Sampling

Our occupational hygienists conduct personal and area air sampling using calibrated pumps and appropriate collection media, following recognized  NIOSH or OSHA methods.

3

Laboratory Analysis

All samples are analyzed in our in-house laboratory accredited under Skim Akreditasi Makmal Malaysia (SAMM) and certified to MS ISO/IEC 17025.

4

Results Interpretation

Results are clearly interpreted in the context of your workplace and workforce. We prepare a comprehensive report detailing sampling strategy, analytical results, OEL comparisons, and risk-based recommendations.

Where exposures exceed or approach OELs, we provide clear recommendations for engineering controls, administrative measures, or PPE improvements, and can conduct follow-up monitoring to verify that corrective actions have been effective.
