LEV Assessment in Malaysia

Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) Assessment

Ensuring your local exhaust ventilation system is working effectively is both a legal obligation and a critical line of defence against airborne chemical hazards in the workplace. Our LEV assessment services help businesses verify, document, and maintain the performance of their ventilation control systems in compliance with DOSH and the requirements under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994.

We support manufacturers, industrial operators, laboratories, and facilities across Malaysia with thorough on-site assessments and expert recommendations to keep your LEV systems performing as intended and your workers protected.

What Is a Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) Assessment?

A LEV system is an engineering control designed to capture and remove airborne contaminants including dust, fumes, vapours, gases, and mists  at or near their source, before they can enter the worker's breathing zone.

Under the USECHH Regulations 2000, where LEV is identified as a control measure for chemicals hazardous to health, employers are required to ensure the system is properly maintained and examined by a competent person at least once every 15 months. This examination must be documented and records kept for a minimum of five years.

An LEV assessment evaluates whether your system is fit for purpose and performing to its design specification. This includes:

  • Hood capture velocity and face velocity measurements
  • Duct velocity and airflow volume assessments
  • Static pressure and system resistance checks
  • Filter and arrestment plant condition inspection
  • Fan performance evaluation
  • Overall system effectiveness against the intended contaminant

Who Needs an LEV Assessment in Malaysia?

Any employer who relies on LEV as a control measure for chemical, dust, or fume hazards in the workplace is required to have the system examined regularly. This includes:

  • Welding and metal fabrication workshops
  • Chemical and pharmaceutical processing facilities
  • Paint spraying and surface coating operations
  • Laboratories using volatile or hazardous chemicals
  • Foundries and metal casting operations
  • Food processing facilities generating dust or vapours
  • Any workplace where LEV is specified as a control in a CHRA report

Our LEV Assessment Process

1

Pre-Assessment Review

We review your existing LEV system documentation, design specifications, previous examination records, and any relevant CHRA findings to understand the system's intended purpose and performance benchmarks.

2

On-Site Inspection

Our competent assessors conduct a comprehensive physical examination of the entire LEV system from the hood and ducting through to the fan, filtration unit, and discharge point to measure airflow, velocity, and pressure parameters.

3

Contaminant Control Evaluation

We assess whether the system is effectively controlling the identified hazard under actual working conditions, including observation of work practices and worker positioning relative to the capture zone.

4

Deficiency Identification

Any deficiencies, deterioration, or deviations from design performance are documented with clear findings and photographic evidence.

5

LEV Examination Report

We prepare a thorough examination report in accordance with DOSH requirements, detailing measurement results, system condition, identified deficiencies, and recommendations.

6

LEV Report and Recommendations

We can provide guidance on corrective works and conduct re-testing after repairs or modifications to confirm the system has been restored to satisfactory performance.
